Frequently Asked Questions

What does a hydrostatic head rating mean?

Hydrostatic head measures how waterproof a fabric is. A rating of 1500mm means a column of water 1500mm tall could stand on the fabric before it leaks. For heavy rain, look for 2000mm or higher on the rainfly, and 3000mm+ on the floor.

Do I really need a footprint (groundsheet)?

While not strictly mandatory, a footprint protects your tent's fragile floor from sharp rocks and pine needles, extending its lifespan. It also adds an extra layer of waterproofing against soggy ground.

Why is my tent wet on the inside when it didn't rain?

That is condensation. The average person exhales up to a pint of moisture overnight. If the tent isn't properly ventilated, this moisture hits the cold rainfly and turns into water droplets. Keep your vents open!

How much should a backpacking tent weigh?

For a modern 2-person backpacking tent, a weight between 2.5 lbs and 4 lbs is standard. Anything under 2.5 lbs is considered "ultralight," while going over 5 lbs will feel quite heavy on long hikes.

Can I use a 3-season tent in the winter?

It depends on the winter. If you mean mild cold with no snow, a 3-season tent with a good sleeping bag is fine. If you mean heavy snowfall and high winds, a 3-season tent will likely collapse or freeze you out due to too much mesh ventilation.
